ENGLISH DESCRIPTION:
ALONE OR LONELY? THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF SOLITUDE AT A REGIONAL LEVEL IN EUROPE
What is the economic impact of solitude?
We are honored to welcome world-renowned Professor of Economic Geography Andrés Rodriguez-Pose back this year, KÅKÅ|nomics, where he will talk about the economic impact of solitude. His research is widely cited in academic circles, making him one of the world's most influential scholars. In the 2021 Stanford/Elsevier list of the 2% most cited scientists he was ranked first worldwide in the field of urban and regional planning by scholarly citations in 2020. In addition, Rodriguez-Pose is well-known as an inspiring and excellent presenter with a great attitude on the stage. We look forward to welcoming you all to this event.
Solitude is a rising phenomenon in the western world. The number of people affected by solitude has been rising for some time now, and the Covid-19 pandemic has brought this trend to the fore. Distinguishing between being alone and being lonely has important implications for not just individual wellbeing but also for collective economic performance. But what are the economic consequences of the rise in solitude?
In a new project Andrés Rodriguez-Pose (LSE) and Chiara Burlina (University of Padua) are distinguishing between being alone (e.g. living in single person households) and lonely (having low levels of social interaction) and how this affects the economic performance of the regions of Europe. They discover that the rise in solitude across Europe has mixed connections to economic performance. Whereas high shares of the population living alone are drivers of economic growth, that is not the case for being lonely (as well as for having very frequent interactions with other people).
