About KÅKÅ|nomics
In short, the point of KÅKÅ|nomics is to have economists explain to a broad audience how they see the world develop. Joining economists are psychologists, technologists, philosophers, historians, journalists, artists, politicians and comedians. The final product is enjoyed by laymen and professors alike. And should be important. KÅKÅ|nomics is both a platform and a meeting place.
KÅKÅ|nomics 2021 had 100 events with 150 speakers lecturing, debating, contemplating and performing in front of some 6 000 people. This year’s festival will contain some 100 events and roughly 200 participants on 12 venues over four days. We cooperate with national and international broadcasting, national radio, national and Nordic media, national think tanks and regional organizations.
This year’s festival also includes a economics policy conference on daytime, Thursday 27. October, entitled: “The Annual Stavanger Economics Policy Conference”, hosting the finance minister and major Nordic economists. There is an academic seminar as well, Wednesday 26., situated at the University of Stavanger.
The festival is always located in Stavanger, Norway. Our speakers are asked to dress casually while the interviewers (often talented journalists and comedians) dress formal.
A crucial component to KÅKÅ|nomics is its many venues: Cafés, bars, restaurants, churches and similar venues help us create a different setting than what one usually associates with economics.
The programme is designed by an editorial board of free professionals, including dean at HH UiS, Ola Kvaløy, principal at UiS, Klaus Mohn, professor Silje Haus Reve, former editor in chief at the regional newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad Tom Hetland, and Margete Vika, communications advisor in Elleve. Our ambition is to be a key festival on economy / politics in Norway and the most important platform for economics in the Nordic countries. We want the festival to be an international platform bringing improvements and options to the economic system, that sometimes seems to be beyond control of democratic governments.
Speakers enjoy the festival’s informal approach where they get to interact outside board rooms and committees. Speakers tend to want to return to KÅKÅ|nomics. There is a social programme and possibilities to discover the fjords and Nordic nature, Pulpit Rock, great people, economists, professionals and thinkers, societal days and nights!
We livestream some of the events, most will be published throughout the year at our digital platform www.kknomics.no. We receive great feedback from both audience and speakers. Both national media and broadcasting covers the festival.
The festival is arranged by a non-commercial foundation – KÅKÅ kverulantkatedralen (The Cathedral of Good Quarrels). We cooperate with the University of Stavanger and other universities all over the Nordic countries, and a range of local and national institutions, including departments, banks, workers and employers’ organizations, city council, regional county, art council and The Fritt Ord (Freedom of expression) Foundation, Norway.
